Waiuku in a few lines
Counties Energy
Counties Energy runs the network from southern Papakura to Mercer, with substations at Waiuku and Maioro among others. Report outages on 0800 100 202.
Trees and storms
In Cyclone Gabrielle, Counties Energy worked on more than 1,000 faults and said most were caused by tree damage.
An old river port
Allotments were sold to settlers in 1851. After a fire on 28 August 1916, buildings in the town centre had to be brick or masonry.
Older buildings
The Waiuku Jail (1865), Wesley Methodist Church (1883), Hartmann House (1886) and Pollock Cottage (1890) are still standing.
Steel next door
The Glenbrook steel mill, a major local employer, began operating in 1968. Waiuku had 3396 dwellings in 2023.
Trees, lines and your property
Counties Energy says to treat all power lines as live. If a tree has brought a line down, stay at least 10 metres away and call 111, then Counties Energy. Don't try to clear branches near a line yourself.
If your own service line or overhead supply to a shed runs through trees, get a licensed electrician to look at it before the next winter storm. Moving a troublesome overhead supply underground is sometimes worth it. See underground power.
Older homes and rural blocks
Older Waiuku houses can still have fuse boards and no RCDs. Out of town, power to pumps, sheds and workshops is common. A new circuit to an outbuilding is general work, with a Certificate of Compliance and an Electrical Safety Certificate.
If we lived around Waiuku
We'd save the Counties Energy number, keep a torch by the switchboard, and get the outdoor wiring checked before winter. On a tree-lined rural network, being ready for an outage is half the job.

Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
