Electricians in ManukauA planned city centre ringed by 1970s and 1980s streets.

Manukau was planned as a city centre in the 1960s, and the homes around it, in Goodwood Heights, Clover Park and Puhinui East, mostly date from the late 1970s on. Many have changed hands recently, and more Wiri households now own their home than in 2018. We'll match your job with one licence-checked electrician who does that work around Manukau.

Around Manukau

A planned centre

Manukau City Council bought land in 1966 for its new centre. The mall opened in October 1976 and the council building in 1977.

Goodwood Heights

The first subdivisions were advertised in April 1979, and a Housing New Zealand project had been built by 1981. It had 1191 dwellings in 2023.

Clover Park

Clover Park, on the edge of Manukau Central, had 2043 dwellings in 2023.

More owners in Wiri

Home ownership in Wiri rose from 22.5% in 2018 to 35.5% in 2023, while in Goodwood Heights it fell from 67.7% to 61.1%.

The 2021 tornado

The Papatoetoe tornado of 19 June 2021 killed a worker at Wiri Station and affected about 1200 homes, 60 of them uninhabitable.

Buying your first home here

A house from the late 1970s or 1980s is often in good shape electrically, but the board may have no RCDs, or only one. A pre-purchase inspection tells you before you commit. After you move in, adding RCD protection to the lighting and power circuits is one of the most useful upgrades you can make.

Renting around Manukau

In the Ōtara-Papatoetoe board, 56.1% of households pay rent. Every rental has to meet the healthy homes standards, including fixed heating and extractor fans that vent outside, and tenants can't do electrical repairs themselves.

After a storm

Wind damage to a roof or a fallen tree can pull the service line or damage the meter board. Keep well away from any fallen line, call 111 and Vector, and get a licensed electrician to check the house before the power goes back on.

If we were buying in Manukau

We'd ask the inspector specifically about RCDs and the age of the board. Those two answers tell you most of what you need to know about a 1970s or 1980s house.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who runs the lines in Manukau?

Vector. Report outages on 0508 VECTOR (0508 832 867). After a cut, your hot water cylinder should come back on by itself.

What's an RCD and do I have one?

It's the switch on your board with a test button. It cuts the power if current leaks, which can save a life. If your board has none, ask a licensed electrician about adding them.
