Your region

Electricians in the Auckland regionFrom Wellsford to Waiuku, and where your side of the wires starts.

Most of the Auckland region is on Vector's lines, and the far south, from southern Papakura down, is on Counties Energy. Power cuts and lines down go to them. From your boundary inwards the wiring is usually yours, and that's where a licensed electrician comes in. Tell us the job and we'll match you with one local sparky who does that work.

Two lines companies, one region

Vector: Wellsford to Papakura

Faults and outages: 0508 832 867 (0508 VECTOR). Vector says about 55% of its Auckland customers have underground lines out front, and overhead lines are still common elsewhere.

Counties Energy: the far south

Coast to coast from southern Papakura to Mercer, and west of the Waikato River down to Waikaretu, which takes in Pukekohe and Waiuku. Faults: 0800 100 202. Papakura itself is split between the two companies, so check the ENA lines company map if you're not sure.

Why some houses stay dark after the street comes back

At the peak of the April 2018 storm, 180,000 Vector customers had no power. By 20 April about 150 were still off, a large share because of damaged service lines, which belong to the property owner. Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023 went further: about a third of Vector's overhead network had outages, affecting over 218,000 customers, mostly because of trees.

So if the neighbours are back on and you're not, look for a line sagging off the house or a damaged pole on your section. If a line is down, stay at least 10 metres away and call 111, then Vector or Counties Energy. Once it's safe, a licensed electrician repairs your side.

One more Auckland quirk: on the North Shore, in Waitākere and in Rodney, Vector switches hot water by pilot wires and repairs them only after everyone's power is back. A cold shower the day after a storm doesn't always mean a dead cylinder.

Villas, state houses and new estates

Auckland Council's history of the city's housing says villas were common in the early 1900s, with bungalows and Spanish mission homes popular from the 1920s. Devonport, Birkenhead Point and Helensville are among the special character areas. In houses that age, original wiring that's been added to for decades usually means a rewire or a switchboard upgrade.

State housing shaped the south: in the early 1970s over 40% of houses in Ōtara were state houses. In the 2023 Census, 32.6% of dwellings in Māngere-Ōtāhuhu were recorded as always or sometimes damp, so extractor fans and other healthy homes work are practical jobs there.

Growth is at the edges. Hobsonville's dwellings more than doubled between 2018 and 2023, and Counties Energy names Pukekohe, Paerata, Drury, Karaka and Glenbrook among its fastest growing areas. Vector says new connection work submitted from 16 October 2026 is likely to be scheduled in 2027, so building means applying early (new connections). Planning an EV charger? Ask the electrician to check with your lines company first.

Local pages, national rules

Start at Auckland, or go straight to North Shore, West Auckland, South Auckland, Pukekohe, Warkworth or Waiheke.

With so many Aucklanders renting, one rule matters: landlords and tenants can't do electrical work in a rental unless they're registered and hold a current practising licence. Everyone else should check the electrician's licence on the EWRB register before work starts (how to check).

Our take for Auckland

In an older villa or bungalow, get an electrical inspection before you add anything big. In a new build on the city's edge, ask now for spare room on the switchboard, so a charger or solar later doesn't mean a second board.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who fixes the line between the street and my house?

Vector generally owns the lines up to the point of supply, usually a fuse on your boundary or on the nearest pole. From there to the meter is the property owner's service line, and Vector says to call an electrician if that's where the problem is.

Is Pukekohe on Vector?

No. Pukekohe and Waiuku are on Counties Energy, so a cut there goes to 0800 100 202. Most of the rest of the region, Wellsford down to Papakura, is Vector.
