Morrinsville, electrically speaking
Powerco is your lines company
Morrinsville is on Powerco's lines. Its 24/7 emergency number is 0800 27 27 27, or 111 in an emergency. If your switchboard shows burn marks, strange smells or crackling, Powerco says don't touch it and call that number.
Upgrades to keep up with growth
In July 2025 Powerco announced a new 33 kV switchroom at the Morrinsville substation, a new substation on Magistrates Avenue and about 2.8 km of new underground cable, due by May 2026, for new industrial and residential development.
A town built on dairy
Thomas Morrin founded the Lockerbie Estate in 1873, and the village grew as its service centre. The town still has a butter factory and a fertiliser factory, and depends on the Piako dairy country around it.
New state homes, and older ones
Kāinga Ora finished 11 new three-bedroom homes in Morrinsville in 2024, on Lear Street and Allen Street. It says 70% of its homes were built before 1980, which is why it's looking at redevelopment.
Growing steadily
Morrinsville had 9,003 people in 3,390 dwellings at the 2023 Census, up 27.8% in ten years, with a median age of 38.5.
The jobs that come up in Morrinsville
Healthy homes in rentals. A fixed heater for the main living room with a thermostat, extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom that vent outside, and working smoke alarms. Since 1 July 2025 every private rental has had to comply.
Pre-1980 houses. Original switchboards with fuses, too few power points and no RCDs are typical of the era. A board upgrade with RCDs is usually the first job, and a higher-capacity board gets an independent inspection.
Wiring new homes and extensions. New circuits for lighting and power points need RCD protection, and general work like this comes with a CoC and an ESC once it's finished.
Our take for Morrinsville
If you own a rental here, we'd do the heater, fans and alarms in one visit and get the details in writing for the tenancy agreement. If you live in an older house, we'd get the board sorted before adding anything that draws a lot of power.
