Electricians in HuntlyThe power station town, with plenty of young families.

Huntly is home to New Zealand's largest thermal power station, but its own homes run on WEL Networks' lines like the rest of northern Waikato. It's a young town, with 23.8% of residents under 15, and rural properties with their own lines on its edges. So the jobs here run from smoke alarms and safer family homes to storm repairs on private service lines. We'll look for one licence-checked local electrician who does that work.

Huntly at a glance

WEL Networks' lines

Huntly is one of the townships on WEL Networks, which connects more than 103,000 homes and businesses across the Waikato. To report an outage or fault, 24/7, call 0800 800 935.

A young town, and a rural ring

Huntly had 8,232 people in 2,649 dwellings at the 2023 Census, with a median age of 34.4. The Huntly Rural area around it had another 870 dwellings. Across Waikato District, 26.12% of households didn't own their home.

Floods and cyclones

In July 1998 extremely high Waikato and Waipā river levels caused extensive flooding downstream of Hamilton. WEL says Cyclone Dovi in 2022 left some customers without power for days, and Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023 did significant damage to its lines.

The power station

Huntly Power Station, on the western bank of the Waikato River, is the country's largest thermal power station. It feeds the national grid, so it doesn't mean fewer outages on your street.

What Huntly homes tend to need

Smoke alarms for family homes. Fire and Emergency recommends long-life photoelectric alarms in every bedroom, hallway and living area, tested monthly. Interconnected alarms wake everyone at once.

RCDs and an upgraded board. Older homes without RCDs are worth upgrading, especially with kids around. An RCD cuts the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks through a person.

Private service lines on rural blocks. WEL says a private service line belongs to the property owner, who must organise repairs as soon as possible if a storm damages it, and only qualified professionals may work on or near it.

Checks after a flood or storm. Anything wired in that's been wet stays off until it's tested.

Where we'd start in Huntly

With young kids in the house, we'd put RCD protection on every circuit and interconnected smoke alarms in the bedrooms before anything cosmetic. On a rural block, we'd also ask an electrician to look over the private line and poles before winter storms.

Questions

Straight answers.

A storm brought down the line to my house outside Huntly. Who fixes it?

Stay well clear and call WEL on 0800 800 935, or 111 if anyone's in danger. If it's your private service line rather than WEL's, WEL says organising the repair is up to you, using qualified professionals.

Can I add a power point in my Huntly home myself?

If you own and live in the home and aren't paid, WorkSafe allows some limited work, but new cabling must be inspected and connected by a licensed electrical inspector, and the switchboard is off limits. It's never allowed in a rental. Most people find it simpler to have a licensed electrician do it.
