Life at the Mount, for your wiring
Salt from two directions
BRANZ's Chapel Street test site, about 20 m from the coastline, showed copper corroding at least one category faster than mild steel or zinc. Homes this close to surf and harbour sit in the high-salt exposure zones.
Industrial air near the port
BRANZ reports that fertiliser manufacturing and shipping dominate sulphur dioxide levels in the southern Mount Maunganui area, which adds to corrosion on anything metal outdoors.
Storms and slips
Tauranga City Council recorded 199.3mm of rain on 21 January 2026 and 96.1mm the next day, with 42 landslides on Mauao and six lives lost at the holiday park below it. A tornado on 13 May 2015 damaged homes near Baypark Stadium.
Powerco's lines
The Mount is on Powerco's lines, with a 24/7 emergency line on 0800 27 27 27. Powerco plans a Maui Street substation for businesses in the industrial area moving off fossil fuels.
Who lives here
Mount Maunganui had 21,030 residents in 8,316 dwellings at the 2023 Census, with 21.3% aged 65 or older. Across Tauranga City, 30.64% of households didn't own their home. The first house, built in 1906, still stands.
Jobs that come up at the Mount
Corroded outdoor fittings. Outdoor power points, lights, meter boxes and heat pump isolators can rust, crack or let water in. A sparky can replace them with fittings suited to the coast, and check the cable behind them.
Checks after storms. After heavy rain, slips or wind damage, have anything that got wet tested before it's used again.
Apartments and older beach houses. Older homes may still have original switchboards with no RCDs. In a unit, check with the body corporate before touching anything shared, such as the main board or car park supply.
EV chargers and solar. Both are popular, but outdoor parts need the same corrosion thinking. Gen Less advises a Type B RCD and a separate sub-circuit for a wall charger.
Water in the house or a slip near the lines
If water has reached power points or the switchboard, keep everyone clear and only turn off at the main switch from a dry spot. If a slip or tree has brought down a line, stay at least 10 metres away and call 111, then Powerco on 0800 27 27 27.
If we lived at the Mount
We'd have outdoor fittings and the meter box looked at every year or two, before the rust gets to the wiring. When anything outside needs replacing, we'd ask for fittings and fixings made for coastal conditions.
