A town that keeps getting bigger
Kerikeri had 8,070 people in 3,336 dwellings at the 2023 Census, up 34.4% since 2013. Top Energy says Kerikeri and its surrounds have been one of the fastest-growing population centres in the country, are now the dominant load centre on its network, and see strong demand for subdivisions.
To keep up, Top Energy built a new 110 kV line from Kaikohe to Wiroa, a switching station at Wiroa and a new zone substation in Kerikeri town, with a Wiroa 110/33 kV substation planned. For homeowners, the growth shows up as new connections, bigger supplies and lots of building work.
Kerikeri's network in brief
Top Energy, owned by its customers
Top Energy supplies 34,500 consumers, who own it through the Top Energy Consumer Trust. Its network runs from Hukerenui, about 25 km north of Whangārei, to Te Paki, 20 km south of Cape Reinga.
Trees kept the power on
Top Energy says Kerikeri, Kaitaia and Kaikohe all kept power through Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, largely because of tree trimming in those towns. Fallen trees were its biggest problem elsewhere.
When the grid fails
When a Transpower tower fell near Glorit on 20 June 2024, about 30,000 Top Energy properties were initially affected. By midnight only 177 were still off.
Older rural lines
Over 35% of Top Energy's lines were first built with post-war rural reticulation subsidies, and Top Energy says many now need extensive rebuilding.
Connecting and upgrading in Kerikeri
New connections. Top Energy says a straightforward new residential connection takes about 30 days if the service cable is installed correctly, while complex jobs can take 4 to 6 months. Once Top Energy assigns an ICP number, you give it to your retailer, who requests the meter.
Upgrading an existing supply. You must apply before going from single to three phase, increasing the fuse rating, or adding a meter or a controlled load. If you're adding a big workshop, a pool pump and a charger to a lifestyle block, that's the conversation to have first.
Solar. From 1 April 2026 a single phase home on Top Energy's network can export up to 10 kW of solar, up from 5 kW, subject to a network assessment. Inverters must comply with AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 with volt-var, volt-watt and frequency-watt functions turned on.
Sparks, trees in lines or a line on the ground
Stay clear and call Top Energy on 0800 867 363. If anyone's in danger, phone 111 immediately. Top Energy says to stay at least 10 metres from downed lines, and if you, a tree or your tools could come within 4 metres of a line, don't do the work yourself.
What we'd do in Kerikeri
Building on a new section, we'd have the electrician lay the service cable to Top Energy's requirements and lodge the application early, because a correct cable is what keeps a simple connection to about 30 days. On an established property, we'd get the trees near the lines looked after. Gabrielle showed it works.
