Lines down in a windstorm? Keep well back
During the October 2025 windstorm MainPower told people to treat every downed line as live and stay at least 20 metres away. Call 111 if anyone's in danger, then MainPower's 24-hour faults line on 0800 30 90 80.
Rangiora up close
MainPower's home ground
MainPower's lines run from north of the Waimakariri River through the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts to KaikÅura. Its Southbrook grid exit point supplies Rangiora, Cust, Oxford and Pegasus, and 55% of that load is residential.
Wind is the big outage risk
The September 2013 windstorm cut power to almost 14,000 MainPower customers, 40% of them, mostly from trees hitting lines. Before the October 2025 windstorm MainPower warned up to 20,000 homes and businesses could lose power. The June 2006 snowstorm destroyed more than 500 power poles across Canterbury.
An older population in the middle
Rangiora had 18,855 people in 7,728 dwellings at the 2023 Census, with a median age of 46.9. The High Street from the Town Hall to Ashley Street is unofficially a heritage precinct.
Growth on the edges
Waimakariri District Council expects more than 30,000 people to call Rangiora home by 2048. MainPower rebuilt its Southbrook zone substation because new subdivisions and businesses were pushing up demand, and plans a Coldstream zone substation from 2026 to 2028.
Jobs that tend to come up in Rangiora
Making homes easier to live in as people age. Better lighting in hallways and on paths, switches by the bed, and smoke alarms that are easy to test. Interconnected alarms mean one in the kitchen sets off the one in the bedroom.
Switchboards in the older streets. Homes near the centre may still have fuses or no RCDs. A board upgrade is the usual fix, and a higher-capacity board is high-risk work that gets an independent inspection.
EV chargers and solar on the new subdivisions. MainPower approves single phase solar up to 10 kW and asks for an inverter that meets AS/NZS 4777.2:2020. A home charger needs its own circuit and a Type B RCD.
Finding faults after a storm. If your street is back on and you aren't, the problem is likely on your side, and an electrician can trace it.
Where we'd start in Rangiora
In an older house, we'd have the switchboard checked first, then sort lighting and smoke alarms around how you actually use the rooms. In a new build, we'd go straight to the charger or solar conversation, because the board will usually be ready for it.

Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
