Ashburton's lines company and river

A lines company its customers own

EA Networks began in 1921 as the Ashburton Electric Power Board and is now a co-operative: consumers hold rebate shares and vote for its Shareholders Committee. It says irrigation demand made its growth accelerate dramatically in the 1970s.

Outage alerts by text

You can report a supply problem to your retailer or straight to EA Networks on 0800 430 460. Its outage list updates automatically, and you can sign up for text and email alerts when the power is out at your place.

The 2021 flood

In late May 2021 Lismore, near Ashburton, had 238 mm of rain in 2.2 days. Authorities planned for evacuating up to 4,000 homes near the Ashburton River, Hakatere Marae became an evacuation centre, and on 1 June flood scouring damaged the State Highway 1 bridge.

Two sides of the river

Tinwald, Ashburton's one large suburb, lies south of the Ashburton River / Hakatere. The 2023 Census counted 20,346 people in Ashburton, up 5.1% on 2018, in 8,124 dwellings.

Before you dig, trim or build near a line

EA Networks needs written consent before any excavation within 5 metres of a pole, tower or stay wire, and close approach applications must go in at least five days before work starts. Fence posts, driveway work and garage footings all involve digging, so check first.

Trees are the landowner's job in most cases, though EA Networks pays for a tree's qualifying first cut or trim. If you, the tree or your tools could come within 4 metres of a line, contact EA Networks first.

If an electrician or builder needs your supply off to work safely, EA Networks says a temporary disconnection is in most cases free on weekdays between 8am and 5pm with three working days' notice.

Common electrical jobs in Ashburton

New connections and bigger supplies. On EA Networks' lines your electrician usually applies for the connection for you, your retailer organises the meter, and EA Networks works with both to complete inspection and livening. A change of supply, more or less capacity, is handled as a standard connection.

Solar. EA Networks has its own application for systems of 10 kW or less. Compliant single phase connections can export up to 10 kW subject to capacity, but in congested areas exports may at times be limited by up to 100%. A grid-connected system also needs an import/export meter.

Rentals. At the 2023 Census, 31.55% of Ashburton District households didn't own their home or hold it in a family trust. Landlords can't do the electrical work for the healthy homes standards themselves, and need a licensed electrician.

Downed lines on a Mid Canterbury road

EA Networks says to treat every power line as live, even when it's lying on the ground. Stay at least 10 metres away, call 111 if anyone's at risk, and report it on 0800 430 460. Flooded wiring or appliances stay off until a licensed electrician has checked them.

Our take

If you're planning a fence, a shed or a trench anywhere near a pole, we'd ring EA Networks before the digger turns up, not after. For solar, we'd have the electrician check what export your street can actually take before you size the system.
